“Those who have canoes”
Bordered by Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Arkansas, Nebraska, Kentucky, Tennessee and Oklahoma, Missouri is the only state to share its borders with the most states. Its name comes from the Missouri river, and is derived from the Missouri Native American tribe : “those who have canoes,” and those who will sail.
And yet, Missouri accounts for more than 1800 km of waterways all thanks to its numerous streams. It is also important to note that it intersects with the Mississippi River which extends to over 900 km. Its main tributary, the Missouri river, aids in making the biggest river basins in the world. The ensemble of the Ozarks lake come together to make up différent lakes, streams and little rivers which allows for canoeing, fishing, swimming and a bunch of other pastimes. There are also quite a few restaurants!
The state is home to a bunch of other cities and noteworthy celebrities. Hannibial is an excellent example of waterway city of the 19th century, and was the birthplace of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, who is known by the name of Mark Twain, and was the author of ‘Adventures of Tom Sawyer.’
Actor Brad Pitt is also from the city of Springfield, and the famous Walt Disney spent a good part of his childhood in the city of Marceline, before beginning his career in Kansas City. Since becoming the biggest city in Missouri, Kansas City is the city of fountains (there are as many fountains here as there are in Rome!). Its nightlife is also eclectic with a big blues and jazz culture, and has in fact become the capital for this - it is even home to the American Jazz museum.
Missouri, a gourmet state
Sugar amateurs rejoice! Missouri has a reputation for its Gooey Butter Cake - a thick butter cake that is incredibly smooth, and most of the time coated in sugar. There are also several reputable companies for all those chocolate addicts out there - worth mentioning is the Bailey’s Chocolate Bar, with more than 20 chocolate martinis on its menu and several choices for ice cream flavours. Christopher Elbow Chocolates and Askinosie Chocolate are also based in Kansas City and in Springfield - they are artisan chocolate factories! Christopher Elbow is a true artist when it comes to pralines, he creates the most beautiful chocolates! However, Askinosie also specializes in a range of quality dark chocolate bars with flavours that are to die for!
