Belgian Pralines

Brief history of Kentucky

Kentucky is different from other American states since it is Commonwealth - just like only four other states out of the fifty in total. Kentucky shares its border with Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, Tennessee and Missouri ; it also crosses paths with the Mississippi and Ohio river. This state has the most densely population of caves in the world!

Kentucky is Abraham Lincoln’s birthplace, who was the 16th president of the United States and who fought to abolish slavery. Kentucky is known for and is dominant in the agricultural sector ; elm, oak, chestnut and maple trees are its primary species. Wheat and corn farming are particularly developed, as well as tobacco which furthermore helped Kentucky’s tobacco industry.

Kentucky’s nickname is the Bluegrass State for two reasons ; there is a plant that grows there that is blue which is commonly found in this state all thanks to its fertile soils. It is also food to hundreds of horses that live on its lands. What is more, Bluegrass music, which is a branch of country music that has roots in the fusion of traditional american and Anglo-Irish musicals and originates in Kentucky.

Kentucky, its symbols and chocolate

One of Kentucky’s symbols is the pure-blooded horse. There are several stables all across the countryside, particularly in the region of Lexington. This state organises two equestrian races that are recognised worldwide: the Kentucky Rolex and the Kentucky Derby which takes place every first Sunday in the month of May. You can expect to find several chocolate coloured horses, which signifies that their skin and eyes are dark, and that their fur and hair are the colour of chocolate. For instance, the Rocky Mountain Horse, the Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, which is the state’s horseback riding horse, has a ‘chocolate’ coat with very clear hairs that are quite specific (due to the presence of its grey gene). This race of horse is very developed and is known for helping around the farm and activities having to do with saddles.

Kentucky is considered to be the birthplace of Bourbon, which is an American whiskey that comes from the county which shares the same name. The highlight of the summer is having the chance of participating in the Bourbon festival every September in the city of Bardstown - the world’s capital of this corn-based liquor. It is also a part of the Bourbon Trail, a tourist trail that passes through villages and villages in order to learn more about this kind of liquor and to have the chance to taste it! And even then, chocolate always finds its way into our hearts. ‘Bourbon balls’ are little bites of chocolate made out of bourbon that were invented by confectioneries by infusing bites of buttermilk with bourbon before dipping them into chocolate. Others have been known to combine hints of dark chocolate pieces with some licorice, vanilla and dark coffee to produce a beer that is brewed throughout several weeks in the state’s best Bourbon barrels ; the Kentucky Bourbon Barrel Stout (to be consumed in moderation).

If you would like to pair local specialities with artisan-created chocolate candies, caraques, truffles and pralines from Belgium when you’re out for a family picnic or with your friends while you are out at the Bluegrass State horse races, do not hesitate to place your order at our online boutique!
