Iowa, the beautiful land

Named the ‘Beautiful land’ by Native Americans, Iowa pays tribute to its name with its ties to a Native American tribe that had originally lived on its territory but today only has about 1,000 individuals.

Bordered by Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota, Iowa will attract nature lovers since it is state that has numerous lakes and since 5% of its land is covered in forests. The Mississippi, Missouri and Big Sioux rivers also make up its borders.

Iowa is mainly an agricultural state ; its cultivated lands cover the biggest part of its lands, notably for corn, oatmeal and soy. Pig farming is also to be noted. Furthermore, every year during 11 days, the state hosts one of the most reputable agricultural fairs in the country: The Iowa State Fair. This fair hosts competitions showcasing the most beautiful animals, traditional cuisine, concerts and much more!

But what is more, Iowa, whose capital is Des Moines, is known to be the home of various important insurance companies. The state is also very well known in the high technology sector, in financial services, biotechnology and the renewable energy sector. It is also worth noting that it was the first state to produce ethanol in the United States.

Iowa’s characteristics

Iowa is also known for its corn production - there is a reason that this state is located in the ‘corn belt’ after all! So, there is no surprise that corn is one of the state’s culinary specialities. Naturally savoury, Iowa corn is cooked just right and seasoned with garlic butter. The Loose Meat Sandwich, which is also called The Tavern Sandwich, is distinguishable from a hamburger. Its meat is pulled as opposed to ground beef in a hamburger - so make sure not to compare the two in front of a local! Apple dumplings is the traditional desert, and is composed of an apple wrapped in dough and then fried.

Fun fact: Buffalo Bill, whose real name is William Frederick “Buffalo Bill” Cody, who was a famous boy scout / bison hunter was born in Iowa! He began to work for Pony Express at the age of 14 and served during the American Civil War.

The presence of French culture is most likely linked to the true passion that residents of Iowa have for chocolate. In any case, this gives way to many different events that take place there. For instance, there is a competition for “Who can come up with the most innovative chocolate recipe?” which is organised by Iowa Public Télévision. Another major event : Iowa’s Chocolate Festival which takes place in its capital, Des Moines. This festival has a lot to offer for its visitors - from interactive chocolate workshops led by world renowned chocolatiers and of course, the opportunity to taste the finished product! It is a great opportunity to compare techniques with the artisan fabrication that Planète Chocolat puts forward. What would be best, actually, is to place an order for caraques, truffles and other orange chocolate sticks while surfing our online boutique and to ship those chocolates to Iowa! You will have the pleasure of tasting the chocolates yourself and to share them with as many people around you!
