History of South Dakota

Enclosed by Wyoming, Montana, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and its sister North Dakota, South Dakota is mostly covered by the Great Plains, where the Omaha, Arikaras and Sioux call home, and they are the only inhabitants of this territory for many years now. This way, there are numerous parts of the territory that are still considered sacred.

Agriculture and tourism are the two main sources of revenue for the state. The state’s national parks are large and there are many of them - they are overflowing with unimaginable riches. The Missouri river separate the state in two, mountains to the West and plains to the East.

South Dakota is lucky to be home of one of the most recognized monuments in the U.S.; the sculpture of four ‘great’ presidents of the United States. It includes: Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln in the famous Mount Rushmore monument.

And what about the Crazy Horse Memorial? It is the biggest sculpture in the world! It represents the Indian Chief ‘Crazy Horse,’ on his mustang. Facing the East, he overlooks the plains where the Indians were massacred by the Yankees.
The Badlands National Park shelters the Black Hills and is the highest post of the state: this is Harney Peak (it is 2207 meters high).

And now the more anecdotal side

Speaking of culinary specialities, Dakota Kuchen is well known for their fruit cake. With a German heritage to the country, but is actually deep fried. Meats like beef and pork are very utilised in their cuisine, alongside a nice serving of mixed vegetables.
This state disposes of the largest gold mining in the United States. The Homestake Mine, particularly, in the city of Lead. There is also a large flock of more than 300 wild mustangs, which is quite rare in the U.S. It is also interesting to note that South Dakota is where Harley Davidson fanatics and motorcyclists get together. So, why not enjoy Belgian chocolates while riding a Harley? It would be a good occasion to congratulate a friend or to thank a ‘motor’ colleague!

Do my chocolates risk melting during the trip?
