North Dakota’s history

North Dakota is a pretty unrecognized state. Bordered by Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota and Saskatchewan and Manitoba (which are Canadian provinces), this state is made up of the Great Plains and the Badlands. The Badlands are clayey terrains and unfortunately not usable when it comes to agriculture - which, nevertheless, occupies a large surface area. The state is also rich in fossil fuels like petrol and brown coal. There are also numerous lakes!

The state’s economy mainly thrives off of agriculture ; wheat, barley, rapeseed, soy and flax seed. There is also quite a bit of corn, sugar beet and soy that comes from the Red River of the North. The industry is poorly developed, but the production of hydroelectric energy is noteworthy. Unfortunately, there are enormous environmental problems that keep appearing due to the exploitation of shale gas.

Some culinary specialities

There are a few culinary specialities from North Dakota, specifically the “Dakota Kuchen,” which is a mixed fruit tart, Cream of Wheat (normally eaten at breakfast), Knoephla Soup (from an onion, celery and chicken stock base).
It is also worth to know that Chippers were born in North Dakota! These are potato chips from the Red River Valley, covered in either dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate and almonds (depending on the flavour). They were created in 1885 by Widman’s Candy ; they were the sole producer and distributor at the time. They didn’t arrive in Chicago until 1985.
Even today. Widman’s is quite important in North Dakota, since it’s the first candy shop to open in this state and because it has always delighted its customers with its delicious candies and chocolates.
Even if North Dakota has its own culinary specialities, artisan-created Belgian chocolate can serve as a gift for somebody all year long. Whether it’s for a birthday, a wedding or quite simply for a chocolate break, there are about 1000 ways to enjoy these treats!
