Belgian Pralines

The narrowest state

With a surface area that is close to that of Belgium's, Maryland shares its border with West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia and Columbia district. Maryland also has access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Next to the city of Hancock, the state closes in, and reaches a width of 1.6km, which, in fact, is the narrowest width in the country.

Maryland is a 'four season' destination. In the winter, you can ski on Backbone mountain, which can accumulate up to 2 metres of snowfall ; in the summer, you can tan lake-side (these are artificial lakes but that doesn't matter). Deep Creek Lake, for example, which the biggest mass of water in the state, is great for swimming and fishing ; plus, take advantage of the many hiking, biking and horseback riding trails all year-round. In the fall, the leaves turn into beautiful orange and red colours and the mountain trails become even more magical.

The state is divided by Chesapeake bay, the biggest estuary in the United States, where canoe, fishing and swimming enthusiasts go to have fun. Fish and different kinds of seafood (notably: oysters, crabs and eels) play an integral role in the local cuisine. The region's traditional meal consists of a pea soup accompanied by sauteed potatoes.

History cities and spots

The state played an important role in colonial history, there was actually a part of the 'Underground Railroad', which were secret tunnels used by slaves to escape South. Numerous sites are open to the public, to in turn support African-American history - both the religious and political sides to it. The most gory battle site that is open to the public is that of the Civil War, which is an old corn field in Antietam Creek.

Baltimore is an independent city (it is not a part of a county) which is usually the case in the United States. Located on Chesapeake bay, this city is originally a harbour city that gathered goods that came from the Caribbean. Today, its port continues to please visitors and it's aquarium is one of Baltimore's most visited sites. Baltimore is an eclectic city - with lots of restaurants and recreational events... even though a quarter of its population lives under the poverty line.

Annapolis, which is the state's capital, is considered the "America's sailing capital,' it is home to the American shipbuilding academy headquarters (a superior educational institution known for its reputable and liberal learning techniques). The city is also known for its Georgian architecture.

Even though Maryland is the name of a very well known cookie brand in England, without being produced in a state that shares the same name, there is an annual gala that takes place in honour of chocolate in the city of Clarksville. Furthermore, the chocolate shop "Zoe's chocolate & co," has several boutiques in the vicinity. Her company prides on three generations of talented chocolate craftspeople, who to this day, continue to make hand-made chocolates with natural and local ingredients. We can easily compare this company's history to that of Planete Chocolat's...

Finally, residents of Maryland can participate in the annual 'Annapolis Chocolate Binge Festival,' which is sponsored by The Annapolis Arts District and The Inner West Street Association. What's in store: taste-tests and lots of chocolate to be bought, concerts, animations and games for children. Don't forgot the market with tons of home-made and DIY items! You can also purchase or sell your jewellery, pottery and candles as well.

Now to compare Belgian artisan expertise with what you are used to in the United States, there is nothing easier than that! We invite you to visit Planète Chocolat's online boutique, select which caraques and assortment of pralines you would like to order and lastly take advantage of our gift delivery service shipping to Maryland. Our team guarantees quality and speedy delivery / service to make sure your velvety chocolates arrive to you in tip-top form. What a great way to enjoy chocolate for occasions like birthdays, baptisms, Christmas, Easter or Valentine's Day!
