Belgian Pralines

Tuvalu, in the center of the Pacific Ocean

The archipelago of Tuvalu is made up of nine atolls, themselves spread out over 1.3 million km² south of the Equator. Its land mass makes it one of the smallest countries in the word in terms of surface area. Settled by Polynesians, these islands were discovered in the 16th century by a Spanish sailor, though the first colonists did not settle there until 1820. The former Ellice Islands came under British control in 1877 and gained their independence a century later. Threatened by the effects of climate change, the islands of Tuvalu are strongly dependent on exterior aid. Local food consumption is essentially geared towards coastal fishing and the cultivation of tubers and tropical fruits. Copra is one of the only products exported. Tuvalu has barely more than 12,000 inhabitants, close to a third of whom live on the island of Fongafale and the island of Funafuti. The international airport is located on the territory of the village of Vaiaku.

Chocolate: a precious product in Tuvalu

Why is chocolate so valuable in Tuvalu? Because it's a rare commodity. In fact, the delivery of products imported from Fiji is done by a cargo ship on a rotating basis . . . a monthly one. If you are a chocolate lover, you need to be extremely patient, or else place an order at Planète Chocolat's online store. There you will find assortments of truffles, boxes of different kinds of chocolates and boxes of artisanal pralines. Taking shipping times into account, you will receive your package without a hitch, so you can finally savor your Belgian chocolate in the heart of the Pacific without waiting impatiently for the next supply ship to come by.
