Vanuatu, a cocoa-producing country in the Pacific

Located in Melanesia, in the southwestern part of the Pacific Ocean, the Vanuatu archipelago is a group of 81 islands of volcanic origin in the Coral Sea. Its closest neighbors are Australia to the east, New Caledonia to the northeast, Fiji to the west and the Solomon Islands to the south. Vanuatu, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands produced close to 50,700 tons of cocoa in 2011, which makes up 1.2% of worldwide production. Although Vanuatu's share of this production is modest, the archipelago has a well-developed cocoa growing industry. The country has only 260,000 inhabitants, with the capital Port-Vila being home to 44,000 of them. Vanuatu is looking to conquer the niche market of the production of organic cocoa, even if, in 2013, this still only represented 30,000 tons, or 1%, of worldwide production.

Betting on organic agriculture

Several years ago, the government of Vanuatu launched the Vanuatu Sustainable Agri-Business Initiative whose goal is to convert certain cocoa bean, as well as coconut, plantations to organic agriculture. With the support of foreign organizations sensitive to these issues, the initiative makes it possible to develop certified products for export to Australia, New Zealand, the United States and the European Union. Organic chocolate is a sector of the market that is growing rapidly, especially since production associated with the tenets of the inclusive economy allows small producers to access premiums and revenues equal to the the work they do. Maybe you've already been able to taste this cocoa from Vanuatu which offers the taste buds a chocolate with delicious smoky, milky and caramelized hints of flavour.
