Belgian Pralines

Ecuador, a former world leader in cocoa production

Because of its geography and its history, Ecuador is a country directly connected to the world’s introduction to chocolate. The Andean country was actually the biggest cocoa exporter in the world until the beginning of the 20th century. Damaged by disease and facing new competition from African and Asian countries, cocoa cultivation then dropped dramatically. The price fluctuation of cocoa also encouraged local producers to switch to the more lucrative crops of bananas and coffee. Now the search for higher-quality cocoa has allowed the country to revive its activity in the area, where its beans are well-known under the names Nacional or d’Arriba.

What is Ecuador's place in the international chocolate industry?

The indigenous variety of cocoa found in Ecuador is forastero, whose beans are purple and flat. This variety is very widespread, representing about three quarters of worldwide production. However, Arriba cocoa contains some remarkable qualities such as its taste, its fruity and floral aroma and its woody, earthy and smoky hints of taste. On a global scale Arriba is considered to be of very high-quality. All the same, the country provides 2.3 % of the worldwide demand for cocoa, which makes for a total volume of 93,500 tons. Don't wait any more to discover its unique and delicious flavors thanks to Planète Chocolat, whose online store offers you a wide selection of products and a delivery service to send chocolate to Ecuador and throughout Latin America.
