The Canaries in a few words

The Canary Islands came under Spanish rule in the 15th century when the Treaty of Alcáçovas was concluded between the Spain and Portugal. The Canary Islands form an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, located 93 miles off the the Moroccan coast. The territory is part of Macaronesia, a geographic region that includes the Canaries, Madeira, the Azores and Cape Verde. The region is one of the European Union's "outermost regions" and one of Spain's seventeen autonomous communities. It contains two provinces: Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The Canary Archipelago is volcanic in origin and the climate has a permanent spring-like feeling with temperatures that range between 64°F and 75°F. In economic terms, tourism is a major source of revenue. Agriculture there is not very developed, mostly consisting of grains, tobacco, vineyards and tropical fruits.

Offer fine chocolate to the Canaries

Cocoa trees aren't cultivated in the Canaries, although it's notable that during the 15th and 16th centuries, cultivation of sugar cane developed in the archipelago especially for "sweetening" the famous chocolate coming from the Americas which the Europeans were finding too bitter. Of course, the consumption of chocolate is as high in island provinces such as the Canaries as in continental Spain. However, if you're there, don't hesitate to introduce your loved ones or your hosts to fine artisanal chocolate with tastes and flavors created with passion. From assortments of caraques to boxes of pralines or truffles, you can count on Planète Chocolat and its delivery service to the Canaries to provide delicious and original gifts.
