Belgian Pralines

Barbados, towards the Lesser Antilles

Contrary to what history teaches us, the Caribbean islands were not only conquered and colonized by the Spaniards and Portuguese. The English, the French and the Dutch quickly followed the first conquistadors to settle on islands still unoccupied by Europeans. This is the case of the island of Barbados, an island microstate, which was ruled by the British for three centuries from 1627. Independent since 1966, Barbados is surrounded by the nations of Sain Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago. Barbados has about 282,000 inhabitants, its capital is Bridgetown and the major towns are Holetown and Speightstown.

Chocolate in Barbados ... not really!

Although the tropical climate is suitable for growing cocoa beans, the country, under the leadership of the English, was first turned to the cultivation of tobacco and then to the more lucrative cultivation of sugar cane. Chocolate is not necessarily part of local customs, despite the strong presence of cocoa in neighboring countries like Venezuela and Colombia. However, at Bridgetown there is a chocolate factory you can visit, just like the rum and tobacco factories. Visitors can discover the long history of chocolate, find out about the different varieties of cultivated beans, understand the manufacturing process and finally sample some delicious products.

But if you want to taste the flavors of your favorite Belgian chocolates, consider calling on the chocolate delivery service to Barbados offered by Planète Chocolat!
