San Carlos de Bariloche, the chocolate capital of Argentina
The history of chocolate in Argentina is rooted in population movements which occurred throughout the 20th century. Hugged between the Andes mountains and the Patagonian Desert, San Carlos de Bariloche welcomed numerous Europeans fleeing the horrors of the Second World War. They brought with them the flavours of chocolate with which they were familiar. Ever since this time, the history of the city and that of chocolate have been intertwined. San Carlos de Bariloche has even officially become the national capital of chocolate in Argentina, this status having been conferred by the Senate! Also of note is the chocolate museum that the city has hosted since 2007, where visitors can learn about the history of chocolate as well as the artisanal manufacturing processes.

In Argentina, chocolate is intimately related to the love and passion avowed between lovers, due in part to its well-known aphrodisiac qualities. It’s therefore no surprise that Valentine’s Day is an important time for the country’s chocolate makers and confectioners. Moreover, in 2010, statistical data revealed that Argentinians are the Latin Americans who spend the most on chocolate, with an average outlay of $32.10, ahead of the Chileans, who spend an average of $27.30. Easter Week is obviously an occasion where chocolate is brought to the forefront by the population, as with the famous Easter egg weighing 8 tons and measuring 8.5 meters, made, of course, in San Carlos de Bariloche.
